Fishing Report

 Lake Fork:
Goodness, where do I start? It’s Easter Sunday at 5:00 in the morning and I am just now getting the time to do my report. Got to be at church in a few hours and then back on a trip at lunch. This is turning out to be the best year for Lake Fork in over 10 years. There has not been a day in March that we have not ended up wacking some big fish. Seems like everyone who approaches me at the marinas and boat ramps are having some good success as well. It has not mattered if we fish the upper or lower end of the lake, good numbers of big fish can be found.
This report is going to be on the last 3 days only due to the rain. The water temperature is rising quickly and the lake is clearing up from our recent rains. There are two different fish to target this next week, pre-spawners and spawners. For the pre-spawn fish I am having the best luck on a Reaction Innovations sweet beaver, texas rigged. Use this bait in 5-12 foot of water and fish outside grass lines and timber. This has produced the best numbers. Color selection on the beaver has not been that important. We have used green pumpkin/red flake, watermelon/red and big Texan. For the shallow water fish I am using 3 baits. Early in the morning the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper will pick up cruising fish up close to the bank or over the shallow grass beds. Once the water warms to 62 degrees, its time to go sight fishing. My two favorite baits this month for bed fishing, have been a 4.0 Boom Boom tube in California 420 and a lizard. Color is very important here because some fish on beds will eat one color over another. I keep 4-5 different color Tubes and Lizards handy.
Lots of fish being caught in White Oak, Wolf, Penson, Bell and Rogers creek right now. So hopefully that will give you a starting point.
Also, don’t be afraid to blind fish beds in the muddy water. By going into Glade or Birch and fan casting where you know they should be, could get your line stretched!
I will have some great pictures on my website later tonight. I went fishing alone on Thursday afternoon just doing some scouting, I caught my biggest fish of the 2008 season a 9.2lb bed fish. Jersey Dan from the Texas Fishing Forum was nice enough to come over and get some great photos for me. Congrats to my the following clients – Will Simcox / 9.0lb, Rodney Harrison / 7 +, John from Texas Air Hydraulics and his friend Justin / 7.8 lb. These fish were all caught in the last three days and were entered in the Lake Fork Big Bass Survey.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge. Digital Photos of your fish will be taken at no charge.

Thanks to my sponsors Gotcha Distributing, Reaction Innovations, Revenge Jigs, Sebile, Arkie, Custom Angle Moby bass rods Oak Ridge Marina and Hideaway Harbor Marina.  I must also thank the Texas Parks and Wildlife for their efforts in keeping this lake great.
Feel free to contact me anytime via email lakeforkdayandnight@yahoo.com or by phone 903-918-9469 if you ever have any questions about Lake Fork or to book your next guided fishing trip on this fine fishery. We hope to see you soon!

Fishing Report

  Lake Fork:

Fishing on Lake Fork has been up and down lately due to the recent cold snaps.  The water temperature has tried to reach 55 degrees, but gets knocked back down due to some chilly nights.  But, this week is supposed to be warm so get the boat cleaned up and come on down for some good fishing.  We have been catching 15-30 fish a day, depending on water temp.  Last Thursday my clients had their heart broke by three double digit fish.  One broke off a jig due to setting the hook too hard, one straightened the hooks out on a Rogue and the other shook off a jig.  There is nothing easy about catching a trophy fish out here, even after you get a big one to bite things can go drastically wrong.  Make sure you are using quality hooks, line, rod and reel.  This will work to your advantage, I promise.   We have noticed waves of fish holding on the first breakline and half way back in the creeks.  These fish are just sitting back, feeding and waiting on the next couple of warm days.  Remember the creeks up North will hold pre-spawn fish first as they warm up the quickest.

The lure selection is really simple.  If a giant bass is all you want, tie on a ¼ ounce Revenge jig in black/blue/purple or watermelon red and fish the outside grass line or on the creek edges.  If numbers are what you are looking for, tie on a Flirt in Juicy and fish the very back of the creeks, lots of males here.  People are asking me what they should throw right now on Lake Fork.  I just tell them to fish however they are confident.  Just about anything stands a chance to catch a huge fish on Lake Fork right now.  Crankbaits, rogues, spinnerbaits, lipless baits, senkos, flukes and lizards all will do the trick right now.  Just cover water until you get bit, when you do catch one set up camp and fish that area hard.  If you catch a fish this time of year, there will be more in the general area.

I have mainly fish the creeks on the East side of Lake Fork.  But, some of my clients have been fishing Little Caney with some great success.  Hideaway Harbor Marina, in the back of Little Caney is a great place to launch for access.  Larry and Jerry (owners) will keep a close eye on your truck and trailer.  Little Caney is one of my favorite spring time creeks on this Lake.  I will post my next report when we get the first glance at fish on the beds.  For the last 3 years this has been the last week in February, you just have to know where to look!

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip.  All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license.  I provide rods, reels, tackle etc. at no extra charge.  Digital Photos of your fish will be taken at no charge.

Fishing Report

 Lake Fork:
As I write this report I am reflecting on the fun I had yesterday on the lake with an old friend of mine. Mike caught his personal best (7.5 lbs) at 8:30 in the morning and nearly beat it again at 1:00 in the afternoon (7.2 lbs). We lost an absolute giant of a fish yesterday that somehow pulled free of # 3 owner wide gap trebles. Although 7 lbs. on Lake Fork is not uncommon, it sure made for a good start and an exciting day. I have lots of new photos that will be posted soon on the 2008 photo gallery of www.lakeforkdayandnight.com.
The water temperature yesterday reached 54 degrees by the end of the day. Today the water temperature reached 57, remember bass will spawn in 62, so it will not be long.
The number one thing I look for in February is warm water. If you can find areas that lack current or wind and have grass close to deep water, you will be in business. I will be throwing only a few baits for the next two weeks. These are lipless baits like the Sebile Flatt Shad, Stick baits like a rogue and a revenge spinnerbait. Lately, colors have not been important. I primarily throw shades of red or gold. But, I have seen other anglers using white, chrome, and chartreuse with good results.
If you are new to Lake Fork this year, here are two areas to target this month. It’s no secret that Birch and Glade creeks have produced huge fish year after year. But, you might want to check out Long Branch, Coon, Opposum, Little White Oak, White Oak and Penson Bay. The best thing to do is just cover water until you can find a group of fish. Once you locate them you should be able to catch several in one area. I like to fish rogues early and lipless baits the rest of the day. The spinnerbait has always worked best for me in windy or overcast conditions.
Catching Bass on Lake Fork the next two weeks is pretty simple. It’s usually the most productive time of year for most anglers. February and March on Lake Fork has provided more anglers with a Bass of a lifetime than any other months of the year. (Summer Night trips do not count!!!!!)
Good luck fishing and remember to use good quality hooks and line. The Sebile baits come with Owner hooks that do not need changing. But, most all others need to be converted. I would not fish any line less than 17 lb. test, unless you want to be heartbroken, 20 – 30 lb. is spooled up on my reels. Finesse fishing has its time and place, but February and March at Lake Fork is not that time!

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip. All you really need to go fishing with me is a fishing license. I can provide rods, reels, tackle etc. with not extra charge.

Fishing Report

  Lake Fork:

Lake Monticello has been keeping me too busy to get out much on Fork.  But, starting next week I will be back to Lake Fork to fish the new Sebile Flatt Shad for the pre-spawn bite.  This bait is going to catch us some whoppers.  This is going to be an exciting year for Lake Fork.

 Lake Monticello:

Lake Monticello has been a lot of fun lately.  Two weeks ago I noticed a huge wave of fish move up onto beds.  They were up for 3 days and then they were done.  But, we are still catching many fish in a pre-spawn pattern.  So the spawn is nowhere close to over yet.  Last Friday I had a trip and we wore the fish out.  It was cloudy and the topwater bite lasted the whole trip.  We had 20 + topwater fish in just four hours.  It was so much fun watching those fish blow up on the Sebile splasher.  We also caught a good amount of fish on a Reaction Innovations Vixen.  My medium action Moby Custom Angle rod is great for topwater, not a single fish got off all day with this new rod.

Saturday I went with Barry Hanson (East Texas Angler) to film a show on Monticello.  That morning I stopped by the carwash to spray off the boat, mistake!  When I got to the lake at 7:00 am I had a ½ inch sheet of ice covering the boat, soap bubbles were frozen solid.  We had a good morning catching fish on Sweet Beavers.  Mid day we only caught a few fish on the Arkie U-bolt head with a flirt, but some anglers from Oklahoma came thru the same area we had just fished and caught 11 fish over 3 lbs. on roadrunners and beetlespins.  I don’t usually bass fish with these two baits and was humbled by this.  Its funny to me how fish are and how they will only bite certain baits sometimes.

If you are coming to Monticello this week try to start early or stay late.  The topwater bite is awesome right now.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork or Lake Monticello on a professional guided fishing trip.  Plenty of dates are always available to get you out on the water and having a great time.   February will kick off the pre-spawn here at Lake Fork and dates during this time will book quickly so please plan ahead for your trip.

Thanks to my sponsors Gotcha Distributing, Reaction Innovations, Revenge Jigs, Sebile, Arkie, Custom Angle Moby bass rods and Oak Ridge Marina.  I must also thank the Texas Parks and Wildlife for their efforts in keeping this lake great.

Lake Fork Report: Jan 3, 2008

Lake Level: all lakes are in great shape

Water Clarity:  Clear to stained: Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh is clear

Water temp:

Weather:  Lows today in the 30’s with a warming trend and a chance of rain this weekend.

News:  Sebile baits has introduced a Blood Red Series for 2008 into its line of fascinating baits that will be available starting at the Arlington outdoor show next weekend at Brannons Sporting Goods.  These new baits are like nothing you have ever used before and believe me, it’s the real deal!

Fishing Report

  Lake Fork:

It is hard to believe but I have only been on Lake Fork once in the last two weeks.  Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh have been taking up all of my time.  The fishing on these lakes has been outstanding so this weeks report will focus on these two fine lakes.  But, another 3 weeks and Lake Fork should be ON!

 Lake Monticello:

Monticello has been outstanding.  The fish are in a pre-spawn pattern with a few fish starting to show up in the shallows on nest.  Of course we have been doing our best catching during the week when the lake is not so packed with anglers.  Also, just like in the years past, the wintertime night bite is awesome on this lake.

Sight fishing this year is being hindered by stained water in Smith and Blundell creeks.  But, I know that a lot of fish are yet to move up because out of 100 or so fish we caught last week only one had a bloody tail as most other were slap full of eggs.  These pre-spawners are falling to numerous baits but a Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and Flatt Shad have been the top producers for larger fish.  A drop shot flirt or light Carolina rig will catch its share of dinks, if numbers are important to you.  Focus in and around the first breakline adjacent to any spawning flats or points.  I would suspect that there would be a huge wave of skinny water fish moving up in the next day or two.  So if you come soon, don’t forget your polarized glasses!

  Lake Welsh:

This little jewel of a lake saved me on Saturday.  We started out on Monticello Saturday morning with only 8 fish or so by 10:00 am.  We loaded both boats up and headed over to Welsh.  First cast 5 pounder, second cast 4 pounder.  We ended up catching fish just about everywhere we stopped.  The fish on the North end of the lake have already spawned out and fry are on every stump.  The fish on the South end of the lake are still lingering around brush piles that are located on the creek channels headed into shallow water.  The fish up North fell for a Skinny Dipper while a Beaver and drop shot was the ticket down south.  We ended up fishing a little after dark and left these fish still biting.  They probably would of bit all night.  This is another great wintertime night fishing lake!  If you can get out in the next 10 days, you should be able to find a huge wave of spawners on the south end.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip.  Plenty of dates are always available to get you out on the water and having a great time.   February will kick off the pre-spawn here at Lake Fork and dates during this time will book quickly so please plan ahead for your trip.

Fishing Report

  Lake Fork:

It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner, time flies when you’re having fun.  On 21Nov07 East Texas was hit by a Northern cold front, temperatures dropped from the 70’s and 80’s to lows in the 30’s overnight.  So an exact report on what has been working the last two weeks would not do anyone much good.  But, what I will report is how we catch these cold weather fish on Fork year after year during this time.  Many of us have been waiting for this cooler weather for several reasons.  I like the cooler weather because the appetite of the bass and crappie will kick into overdrive as they feed up for the winter.  It also narrows down my bait selection to only a few and the fish will really group up on the baitfish making numbers of catches good once schools are found.

Anglers visiting Lake Fork during December and January will find concentrations of Bass in two locations, very shallow (2-9 ft.) and very deep (20-40 ft).  For the shallow water bite I will be throwing two styles of baits being a lipless crankbait like the Sebile Flatt shad and a shakey head like the Arkie u-bolt or jerkey head.  I will team up these finesse heads with a Reaction Innovations 6.95 or 4.95 flirt.  Color on the lipless bait is something you will have to experiment with day to day.  I like using the yo-yo retrieve better than a burning retrieve; this seems to always catch larger fish for us.  On the flirt I like the flirt I like the colors Juicy, California 420 and some others in greens and browns.  I fish the head in the creeks and on the edges, dead sticking.  The key here is to find grass and shad in the back of the creeks.  Start at the back of a creek and work half way out, if no takers try another.

For the deep water bite we will be using four styles of baits being one of my custom spoons, drop shot (flirt), swim bait and a Flatt Shad.  While fishing deep this time of year I depend greatly on my electronics.  I always start out with my custom spoon on these fish.  A lot of guys are casting a spoon and that is fine.  But, when I have marked the fish in 20-40 ft, I like to fish vertical because I can ensure where they are and if they have moved by watching my graph.  Make sure you pause and shake the spoon on the way back up to the boat just incase there are some suspended fish under the boat.  Another great way to catch some lunkers deep is taking the flatt shad and fishing it vertical or horizontal off the bottom (yo-yo), like a spoon.  This is the only lipless bait that I will use for this presentation because it isn’t as loud as others and doesn’t seem to spook any fish in the school, other will.

 Lake Monticello:

December and January offers a limited time of extraordinary wintertime fishing with daily catches in the 40’s to 50’s common.  This is the time of year that this lake shines.  The lake is in great shape with visibility clearing up after the algae bloom and levels rising with water from Bob Sandlin being pumped in.  The big females are in a pre-spawn pattern now.  We have been catching fish all over the lake to include the cold side, hot side, discharge and in between.  My favorite baits to catch these bass in on topwater; baits like the Sebile splasher and a Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark will be a sure thing early, late and all day if it is cloudy.  We can expect to start seeing some fish on the beds it two weeks (if the cool weather hangs around).  During the day lipless baits, crankbaits, Boom Boom tubes and a drop shot is hard to beat.  The lake is short of vegetation this year so the lilly pads and timber is a great place for the hawgs to be hanging out.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip.  I still have some dates available for December and January.   February will kick off the pre-spawn here at Lake Fork and dates during this time will book quickly so please plan ahead for your trip.

Lake Fork Report: 05NOV2007

Lake Level : Full

Water Clarity:  Clear to stained (main lake)

Water temp: 65-72

Weather:  Today, high in the 80’s.  The next 10 days are calling for a cold front coming in tonight causing the next two days to be in the 60’s.  Then we should be warming back up into the 80’s by Thursday.  The rest of the week should be warm with little chance of rain in the forecast.

News:   Oak Ridge Marina and I are offering a seasonal winter special.  You get one full day guided trip, one night at the motel at Oak Ridge and next day a half-day trip all for only $500.00.  This is for one or two people and can be used for Bass fishing or Crappie fishing.  Special will run from Nov. 15, 2007 until Jan. 15, 2008.

Budweiser Share-a-lunker program season has started, awaiting its first entry.

Fishing Report

 Lake Fork :

The fishing here on Lake Fork the last few weeks has been up and down.  I have found a couple of baits that should get you bit.  We have caught some topwater fish early using a Reaction Innovations Vixen over the grass.  If you don’t get bit with the topwater, switch back and forth with a Revenge Spinnerbait in the color shad.   Then we are going to a Sebile Flatt Shad after the sun comes up and burning this bait around the grass edges.  This is a good tactic for most of the morning.  The key here is covering lots of water until you find a group.  After lunch an Arkie jerky head with a 6.95 Flirt in Sprayed Grass or Juicy has been catching numbers, not any lunkers.  We have been fishing the jerky head around the back half of the creeks around big stumps along the creek channels.  You might want to check out some boat docks close to deep water.

Lake Monticello :

The fishing on Lake Monticello is absolutely awesome.  If you don’t think you can get tired of catching bass, visit this lake with me in the next two months.  This week we have averaged 40-80 bass on a full day trip.  The lake is about two foot low and the water is off color, due to an algae bloom.  The water temperature at the discharge is still in the mid 90’s.  Here we have been using a couple of baits to include a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver, Skinny Dipper and a Boom Boom Tube.  Texas or Carolina rig has not mattered they will eat both.  Find your creek channel edges and fish the obvious timber that is sticking up everywhere.  The Dam is also holding some good numbers.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork , Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip.  With the trees turning fall colors and the weather right, there is not a better time to go fishing.

I still have open dates in October and November for everyone; feel free to contact me anytime on what these dates are.  Now is the time to start booking your spring trips with me so I can ensure availability.

Thanks to my sponsors Gotcha Distributing, Reaction Innovations, Revenge Jigs, Sebile, Sunline, Arkie, Moby bass rods and Oak Ridge Marina.

News:  The Berkley tournament was held this past weekend here on Lake Fork.  Just as last year the Bass Champs team did a great job.  Lots of nice fish were caught by competitors to include Sam Trincas’ 9.72, winning him a new Skeeter boat.  I was blessed with a $600.00 first place and a $150.00 fifth place check.  My father too was blessed with a $400.00 check.

Budweiser Share-a-lunker program season has started, awaiting its first entry.

Fishing Report

What a great time we have had the last two weeks.  I have had to give my recent clients the option of catching lots of smaller fish or a few large ones.  The last 10 days most of our fish catches have been around 20-30 per day.    It seems the 4lb. and under class fish are all over the grass, while the 5lb. and over class fish are on a deep-water pattern.  Not saying this always holds up as we have been catching lots of 1-3 lb. fish on topwater when an 8lb+ fish comes to eat out of nowhere.  But, over all it is one or the other.

The grass pattern is the most dependable for me right now.  We are taking the Sebile Flat Shad and burning this bait over the grass first thing in the morning.  The Splasher 90 and 72 has gotten bit as well over the grass, especially on a calm morning.

After the sun comes up focus on the outer edges of the grass in 7-15 foot of water.  Here I would use the Flat Shad and a Texas Rigged Sweet beaver.

If a big bite is what you are looking for, fish anywhere from 17-35 foot of water.  I had a fish hooked up on Thursday that was without a doubt share-a-lunker class.  She made my 12.08 last year look small.  Unfortunately she came off after a long fight and a head-shaking jump.  This fish fell to the Double Wide beaver, Texas Rigged on a creek channel bend.  Also, out deep check your spots with a Carolina rigged Big Unit.

Keep an eye out for schooling bass during the day and the best bait to catch them with is the Splasher 72 worked very fast over their heads.

The temperatures are perfect for a day on Lake Fork, not too hot and not too cold.  But, starting next month I will be offering my trips to Lake Monticello and Lake Welsh.  These two fine lakes often produce 40-60 fish per day for my clients.  This is always a fun trip for everyone.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork, Lake Monticello or Lake Welsh on a professional guided fishing trip.

Until next time, Thanks for reading and I hope this information helps you on your next day on the lake.

Lake Fork Report: 27Sep2007

Lake Level: Full

Water Clarity:  Clear to stained (main lake)

Water temp: 79-82

Weather:  The past few days have been perfect.  Yesterday we received some much-needed rain.  The next 7 days should be clear to partly cloudy with an occasional rain shower possible Monday.  Highs should be in the mid to upper 80’s.

News:  September has always been a great time to catch fish here on Lake Fork.  Summer is almost over and the fish know it.  The recent Mcdonalds tournament really showcased the amount of big fish swimming in these waters.  With a final count of over the slot fish exceeding 35, this wonderful lake shined like a diamond.  On the second evening of the tournament a client of mine from Ohio said, “If this many overs are being caught, can you imagine how many 7-10 lb fish are being caught in the 22-23 ¾ range”.   It is no secret that Lake Fork is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the world.  With September almost over so is the night fishing, for my guide service.  The bite is so strong now during the day, it would make the night bite extremely tough.  October is going to be a time for catching numbers here on the lake.  Berkley is having their tournament on Oct. 13&14.  Last year they put on one of the most professional amateur tournaments I have ever seen.

Fishing Report

If an angler wants to catch a bass, all he or she needs to do is come fishing on Lake Fork during the month of October.  Just about any presentation will work this month, but here are a few that will make you more productive.

This past week we have noticed the shad population shift into a fall migration pattern.  Many of the baitfish is moving off of the mainlake and into the larger creeks around the lake.  Little Caney, Long Branch, Glade and Pincher will give you a starting point.

Early in the morning, late in the day and if it is cloudy, topwater baits like the Sebile splasher 72 or 90 is a fun way to catch a lot of fish over the grass.  The last two days I had Keeton Eoff from Sebile USA, Rick Dusick from The Bargain Tackle Box, Lee Yowell from Legend boats and a bunch of others out on a two-day trip, we wacked them!  In just over 8 hours of fishing inbetween meetings and a lightening storm we had over 80 bass, with a 9.00, 8.1, 8.0 and lots of 7lb. on down.  Mostly on the Sebile Splasher 72 and 90 in amber fashion and hollow mullet.  The 9.0 lb was hung in a tree on the bottom in 19 ft. of water.  I emptied my pockets, dove in and swam down to get her.  That was so cool to be that deep in the drink, come up and lift that hawg into the boat, what a battle.

We have been catching most of our fish after the sun comes up on two different baits.  First the Revenge jig with a Reaction Innovations beaver as a trailer.  Secondly, the Big Unit by Reaction Innovations on a 5/0 hook and a 3/8-ounce weight.  You will have to experiment with colors at different locations.  I would also keep a Sebile flat shad and a Reaction Innovations belly weighted skinny dipper tied on and close by for the occasional schooling fish showing themselves.  All year I have waited on the brush piles to turn on.  For whatever reason they were not as productive throughout the summer this year.  But, the last 10 days that has changed and this is where most of our 8lb. + fish are being caught.

I would like to invite you out to Lake Fork on a professional guided fishing trip.  With the trees turning fall colors and the weather right, there is not a better time to go fishing.

I still have a few open dates in October for everyone; feel free to contact me anytime on what these dates are.

Lake Fork Report: 06Aug2007

Lake Level: Full

Water Clarity:  Clear (main lake)

Water temp: 85-90

Weather:  The past two weeks we have had clear to partly cloudy skies.  Temps have been in the 90’s.  This weather should remain steady throughout this week with a chance of isolated thunderstorms on Saturday August 11.

Fishing Report

Day:  The past two weeks have been very hot during the middle of the day.  But, this has not stopped many diligent anglers from coming out to Lake Fork and whacking on some big fish.  The first five hours of daylight and the last five hours have been the most productive for us.  We have been using deep diving crankbaits, dropshot and chrome spoons to catch some real nice fish.  I have been using several different crankbaits, but I highly encourage you to check out the Sebile Koolie Minnow 118 LL in PZ Natural D-blue back.  The possessed series of Sebile is unprecedented, but I have never been more excited for a bait to hit the market than I have been over their new Blood Red Series coming January 2008.   The largest fish we have caught this week is 9.50 (pics at Oak Ridge Marina).  But, several anglers have broken the double digit mark this week fishing this pattern.  Now, the areas I have been fishing are different than last year.  Last year you could go to any main lake point, hump etc. and do fine.  This year the schools of large Bass are holding on smaller bottom contour changes.  Look close by, but not on main lake points and drops.  Electronics are very important right now.  If you do not have a color unit with GPS you are going to have a difficult time fishing this pattern.

Night:  Last Saturday night I was given the opportunity to take a few Texas Parks and Wildlife employees out on the water for an article being put together for their monthly magazine.  We had a great time and caught some real nice fish.   I hope you get to read that article next summer (July 2008), it is going to have some neat photos and information they gathered.  Everyone with TP&W that I have dealt with has been so pleasant and energetic to keep Lake Fork the greatest Bass Lake in the world, Thank You.

Now to the fishing, the night fishing has been great one night and terrible the next.  This is not going to last long.  With the rising water temp, due to the warmer days, that on and off  trend is going to cease and night fishing is going to be a simple way to catch a lunker.  If you coming to Lake Fork for some night fishing you only need a handful of baits.  This includes some Reaction Innovations (Big Unit) penetration and black emerald is my favorite two colors.  Fish these with a 3/8 or ½ ounce weight and a 5/0 long shank offset hook.  I look for fish in two different spots this time of year at night.  First, grass edges close to deep water, and second, main lake contour changes with a hard bottom (rocks and sand).  These areas are easily found towards the Dam.

There is not a better time to fish Lake Fork at night for numbers and size as the August full moon.  Throughout the years the August full moon has proven itself time and time again.  So mark your calendar around the 27th and get here early in the evening.  During the July full moon the lake was packed all night.  If the public ramps fill up or if you are looking for some extra security, don’t forget Oak Ridge Marina now has free boat launching.

Here are the dates I have available this month.  If you want to get in on some morning or evening crankbait, dropshot or spoon fishing we need to go August 16, 19, 21,22.  If you are looking to beat the heat and have a great time then I have August 27 (night trip) and August 30 (night trip).  If these dates do not work for you, still give me a call, I always want the opportunity to get you on the water.  I will help you plan your trip and make sure you are booked with a guide that is on some fish when you come!

I can even split your trip half day and half night if you want to experience both in one shot. (This is a fun trip!)

Thanks to my sponsors Gotcha Distributing, Reaction Innovations, Revenge Jigs, Sebile, Sunline, Arkie, R&R marine, Moby bass rods and Oak Ridge Marina.  I must also thank the Texas Parks and Wildlife for there efforts in keeping this lake great.

Lake Fork Report: 11 July 2007

Lake Level: Perfect, give or take a rain shower or two

Water Clarity:  Clear (main lake) Stained (back of major creeks)

Water temp: 80-85

Weather:  Off and On thunderstorms the last 2 weeks.  Tonight we have a stationary low with clear skies.  There is an increasing chance of rain heading towards the weeks end.

Since my last report at the end of June, we have had some tremendous rain.  But, this has not dampened the amount of fish we have been catching.  The SRA opened the gates to the dam and it took the fish two or three days to adjust.  But, once adjusted they continued their regular July feeding habits.

The daytime bite has been pretty good the few times I have been out, been spending lots of time out at night.  The bite has seemed to change day to day depending on cloud cover, rain etc.  The fish we have caught during the day have come on a Carolina rigged fluke (baby bass), sweet beaver (california 420) or a flirt (oxblood).  I have been using the Carolina Rig on bare main lake points and ledges.  A deep diving crankbait and a jig will also catch fish in the deep timber out from major grass beds.  Drop Shot fish will be caught all over the lake this month, start with the smallest worm in your boat (a 4.95 flirt works the best for me) and work your way up to something larger once fish have been located.

Most of my trips have been at night this month.  If you have not fished Lake Fork at night you are really missing out.  Take a look at the new pictures on my picture page Lake Fork 2007 and Lake Fork 2007 #2 at www.siteskins.com/lakeforkdayandnight we have really been whacking some big fish.  If you are planning a trip to Lake Fork the next full moon is on 30JUL07.  Four days prior, the night of and four days after would be the dates I would pick, if a trophy size bass is what you are after.  Some great areas of the lake to fish at night are down towards the dam.  There is a nice flat to the left of the gates and another long sandbar to the right of the gates, both have lots of grass.  Both of these areas usually will get you bit and will offer you a starting point and some light, which comes off the gates there at the dam.  Baits to bring include the following:  Reaction Innovations has a 9.5 inch worm called a Big Unit.  I use the Black Emerald.  A jig by revenge will get you bit also, I use blk/blue with a penetration colored sweet beaver as a trailer, and a lot of other colors have worked great too.  The revenge jig has one of the loudest rattles I have heard and seems to not get hung up as often as others, which is a plus at night.  When rigging the Big Unit, I like to use a heavy weighted (1/2 ounce give or take) Texas rig.  I sometimes will put two glass beads between the hook and weight to add some extra noise, especially if there is no moonlight.  I use the heavy weighted bait so I can keep it moving, but still keep close contact with the bottom.  I have found that I’ve always got more strikes by keeping the worm moving along the bottom, even if it’s just shaking my rod tip, like we do with a drop shot.  Remember, bass usually hug close to the bottom at night because they can feed easier looking up at prey into the moonlight/starlight.

Some fishermen have never tried night fishing for one reason or another, boy are they missing out.  If you would like to join me for some of the neatest fishing of the year and want to beat the heat give me a call.  I still have the following nights available around the next two full moons Jul 25, 31 and Aug 24, 27 and 30th.  Day trips are available throughout the month also.   I will split your trip half day and half night if you want to experience both in one shot.

Feel free to contact me anytime via email lakeforkdayandnight@yahoo.com or by phone 903-918-9469 if you ever have any questions about Lake Fork or to book your next guided fishing trip on this fine fishery.

Well, here it is the end of June and boy have we had some rain.  Lake Fork as of today is 3 inches above full pool, with more rain forecasted.  The water clarity is good in all the areas I am fishing.  The large amount of hydrilla and milfoil is helping keep the lake clear.

This is my favorite time of year to fish Lake Fork.  It allows us to catch fish during the day and at night.   I find the larger trophy size fish easier to catch once they have moved out to deeper water to feed.  My trips during the day have been great. There is still a topwater bite early and late using a Sebile topwater plug.   We have been doing well in depth ranges of 15-30 feet most of the day.  Look for main lake points, ledges, road beds etc.  My top baits during the day have been deep diving crankbaits, Revenge Jigs, and Carolina rigged sweet beavers.   Most of the bites on the Jig have come on the fall.   Some of the areas the fish are holding you can use your electronics to locate schools of feeding fish prior to making a cast.  Other areas, like on humps with heavy timber and brush, you must stop and fan cast to see if that group is feeding.  The size of fish holding in these areas vary, but usually once found you can catch at least a couple of fish over 5lbs out of the school.

The night fishing trips I have had in the last two weeks have been good, but not as good as July and August is going to be.  The cloud cover has made it extremely dark, which is why I feel the bite during the day is so great.  July is going to be the month for some successful night trips.  Especially, if these rain showers give us a break.  The fish we have caught at night have come on Blk./Blue Revenge jigs with the Double Wide Sweet Beaver as a trailer.  The bulkiness of the double wide is a must. (This set up has worked early and late during the day also.)  Of course, the Big Unit (10 inch worm) is my favorite night time bait and has produced some nice fish as well.  We are using these baits on the outside grass line on mainlake points.  It is always a good idea to fish an area at night with two or three different baits before moving on.

I have some available dates in July for you and they are: July 10, 13, 16, 17, 22, 25, 26, and the 31st.  If you would like to come join me for an exciting and relaxing day here on Lake Fork give me a call at 903-342-3497 or 903-918-9469.

  Good Luck fishing,

Lake Fork Fishing Report 10JUN07

I finally get a moment to sit down and write this short report.  Lake Fork is at full pool, give or take a few inches day to day.  The water clarity is clear, especially the further south you are fishing.  Milfoil and Hydrilla is just about in every area of the lake now that I have fished.  I have been finding the outside grass line in 10-13 ft. in most areas.

The bass fishing here on the lake has been great.  90% of my trips in the last 2 weeks have been at night.  The bite was the greatest during the 10 days around the full moon earlier this month.  As we loose moonlight the night bite has decreased.  Many of my trips earlier this month would start out with topwater baits one hour before dark.  We would often catch 20-30 fish during this time, mostly small fish.  Then after dark we would head to main lake points, humps and flats with grasses, timber and an occasional man made brush pile to go hawg huntin
